Desires: large, small and conflicted (OUSA 2021, Prof. Frederick Toates)
This talk was given by Professor Frederick Toates for the January OUSA 2021 Freshers Fair.
A study using random sampling found that in a population of people over 50% of the time they were experiencing a desire of some sort. These can be of various intensities and sometimes in conflict with other desires. Some desires seem outside all rational proportions, leading to such terms as ‘irrational’, ‘compulsive’, ‘fanatical’ or ‘addictive’. The lecture will examine what psychology can illustrate with regard to such desires and how they arise.
