Description

'Hidden CSI effect? Face mapping: a cause of forensic mis-identification'

A talk by Dr. Monika McNeill, 7th February 2019, from 6pm (Talk begins at 7pm).

This social event combines a talk and social drinks where you can meet other Open University Psychology students both before and after the talk.

Recognising a friend’s or a family member’s face is pretty easy. Most of us also think that we’re reasonably OK when recognising faces in general. It turns out there is plenty of evidence that we are very poor when it comes to identifying unfamiliar people. How does the criminal justice system deal with it? With the rise of DNA testing we now know that incorrect face identification is accountable for about 75% of wrongful convictions. What happens when there is not enough evidence to match a perpetrator with a suspect and do the available techniques of face mapping really work?

We are delighted to have Dr Monika McNeill giving this talk. Monika is a lecturer in Psychology with nearly 20 years of experience; currently based at Glasgow Caledonian University, where she is a module leader and a popular lecturer in Cognitive and Developmental Psychology. Monika also contributes to a number of other modules, e.g. Applied Psychology, Physiology of Behaviour, Research Methods, Health Psychology and Forensic Psychology. She has nine years of experience working as an applied psychologist, providing therapeutic interventions and developing psychological programmes for young adults and children with high functioning autism (Asperger Syndrome). Monika currently teaches DE200 as an Associate Lecturer with the OU, and also tutors on the OUPS DE100 Consolidation Weekend.

This is a great opportunity to socialise with other OU psychology students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

A flier for the event will be available soon.

Please note that this event is limited to 20 attendees and is expected to sell out. We can't guarantee entry on the night, so book now to secure your place !
