Annual Conference: 2008

‘The fusion of East and West:
 
looking at the relevance of
Eastern philosophical and
spiritual practices to
psychology today’


Date: 4th to 6th of July 2008
Venue: Warwick University

A full weekend conference exploring how eastern thought can inform both the theory and practice of psychology today.  We have secured an excellent line up of speakers of national and international standing, covering a wide range of issues associated with this topic.

Speakers:

  • Dr Susan Blackmore (freelance writer, lecturer and broadcaster) Practitioner of Zen with research interests in evolutionary theory, consciousness and meditation
  • Professor Les Lancaster  (Liverpool John Moores University )  Knowledge and Transformation: inputs to psychological models from Buddhism and Kabbalah
  • Dr Chris Mace  (University of Warwick) Practitioner/evaluator of mindfulness: Chairs the Royal College of psychiatrists' psychotherapy faculty
  • Dr John Pickering (University of Warwick) Talking on how Buddhism and Cognitive science can complement each other
  • Robert Samuels (General Director of Sokai Gakkai Int, UK) Talking on personal experience of Buddhism and the relevance of Buddhist practice to everyday living
  • Dr Richard Stevens (The Open University) A founder member of the Consciousness and Experiential Section of the BPS who has proposed a perceptual-lingual model of consciousness. Talking on how psychology can provide grounds for the development of values and criteria for the 'good life'
  • Professor Max Velmans (Goldsmiths College, London) Research interests in the area of consciousness studies, with a particular focus on mind/body relationships in clinical practice

Plus Dr Peter Connolly (The Open University) will be running an experiential Meditation Session in the early evening lecture slot on Saturday night
